Interview Tips for Every Generation

At a recent networking event, someone mentioned to me, “Gen Z doesn’t know how to interview.” If he is correct, then some interview tips might help.

But these aren’t just for Gen Z. I’ve interviewed people in every work-eligible generation, and poor interview skills exist across generations.

At the end of the interview, have at least one question for the interviewer.

If you can’t think of anything, ask: “How would you describe your management style?”

No matter the response, you will learn a lot from it. Some interviewers fumble on this question, and you will gain insight to help you decide whether you want to work for them in the first place.

For instance, one hiring manager told a candidate, “Well, I don’t micromanage ‘all’ of the time…”

Yikes.

That means that the hiring manager micromanages at least some of the time and doesn’t seem to have a problem with that.

Run, Forrest, run.

So, make sure that you at least ask the question about the interviewer’s management style before you leave an interview. It could save you a lot of heartache down the road.
